SDR - Software Defined Radio: Reduce Risk with Zeligsoft

History

Zeligsoft was founded by Dr. Francis Bordeleau November 7th, 2002. At the time, Dr. Bordeleau was an Assistant Professor at Carleton University’s School of Computer Science where he was researching and teaching software engineering, component-based software engineering, and model-driven development. Dr. Bordeleau was also consulting with a number of Canadian and US companies and institutions, including Mercury Computer Systems, CML Versatel and Communications Research Centre Canada. Dr. Bordeleau helped these organizations especially with component-based modeling of their systems.

In 2003 Zeligsoft received seed financing from Innovatech Quebec and began development of Waveform Builder. Waveform Builder would later become Zeligsoft CE™, Zeligsoft’s flagship development environment for component-based systems.

At that time many US defense contractors were seeking awards for, and beginning work on, the US DoD’s Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS), a family of interoperable Software Defined Radios (SDRs) to become the next generation of radios for use in the US military’s field operations. To ensure interoperability between radios, it was determined that all JTRS radios would use the Software Communications Architecture (SCA), an open architecture, component-based framework.

In June 2004, Zeligsoft released Waveform Builder 1.0 to its first customer, Boeing, the lead defense contractor for JTRS Cluster 1. Zeligsoft worked closely with Boeing and JTRS Cluster 1 sub-primes (such as Rockwell Collins) to meet their requirements: tools to enable them to build component-based software radios conforming to the SCA’s design, deployment and configuration specifications. In Late 2004, Zeligsoft received additional seed financing from Innovatech Quebec and Fonds régionaux de solidarité FTQ.

Zeligsoft continued to sell its Zeligsoft CE development environment to JTRS projects including JTRS Ground Mobile Radio (GMR), JTRS Handheld, Manpack and Small Form-fit (HMS), JTRS Enhanced Multi-Band, Inter/Intra Team Radio (JEM), Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T), Navy Multi-band Terminal (NMT), Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) and Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). The large defense contractors supplying these programs include BAE, Boeing, General Dynamics, Harris, L-3 Communications, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Rockwell Collins and Thales.

In 2005 Zeligsoft introduced Code Generator, a state-of-the-art solution automating the production of SCA-compliant component code.

Through 2005 and 2006, Zeligsoft teamed up with the industry’s best-in-class software and platform providers — including Harris Corporation, Spectrum Signal Processing, Mercury Computer Systems, Objective Interface Systems, Wind River, Green Hills Software, Telelogic and The MathWorks — to create tightly integrated solutions and a single point of support for SDR/SCA developers who were crying out for pre-integrated solutions to de-risk and accelerate their projects. To make purchasing and using pre-integrated solutions even easier, Zeligsoft introduced the SDR Development Suite, a turn-key solution featuring a completely integrated host-based SDR/SCA operating environment.

With its industrial-grade performance, value-added integrations, and widespread adoption, Zeligsoft CE has become the de facto standard for SDR/SCA development with ubiquitous status in North America and beyond.

In April 2007, Zeligsoft introduced CE 3.0, targeting developers of complex multicore and multiprocessor software systems in the telecommunications, military and aerospace sectors.

In June 2007, Zeligsoft completed a financing round led by BDC Venture Capital, including an initial investment from Export Development Canada and Echo Capital FIERS Outaouais LLP, and a follow-on investment from Fonds régionaux de solidarité FTQ Outaouais.

Corporate milestones include the introduction of Zeligsoft CE 1.4 in April 2004, Zeligsoft Code Generator in July 2005, Zeligsoft CE 2.0 in August 2005, SDR Development Suite in November 2005, CE 2.4 in May 2006, SCA Test in June 2006 and CE 3.0 in April 2007.
